MDX Board Votes to Maintain Future Toll Rate on SR 836 & Announces 2013-2014 Board Elections Results

After a second public hearing attended by several elected officials and members of the public, the MDX Board voted to maintain the toll rate of 70 cents for the mainline gantries on SR 836. Maurice A. Ferré will continue to serve as chair of the board of directors.

"I am very grateful to my fellow board members for the unanimous vote of confidence in electing me as chair,” said chairman Ferré.

The Miami‐Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) Board of Directors voted maintain future toll rate on SR 836/ Dolphin Expressway as previously approved on March 19, 2013.

After a second public hearing attended by several elected officials and members of the public, the MDX Board voted to maintain the toll rate of 70 cents for the mainline gantries on SR 836. This toll rate is scheduled to take effect in the summer of 2014.

Board members discussion centered on critical mobility aspects for SR 836 to support freight movement, economic development and job creation. Key to this difficult decision was recognition of the value of time and the economic and environmental costs associated with congestion for commuters in Miami‐Dade and the benefits of faster project completion.

Earlier in the evening the MDX board also held their yearly election, this year all candidates in this year’s election won unanimously. Maurice A. Ferré will continue to serve as chair of the board of directors.

“I am very grateful to my fellow board members for the unanimous vote of confidence in electing me as chair,” said chairman Ferré.

Maritza Gutierrez was elected as vice chair of the board. The former MDX chairwoman is also MDX’s representative on the board of the Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Carlos Fernandez‐Guzman was elected as treasurer of the board. Maria Luisa Navia Lobo and Eileen Figueroa will also continue their roles as board secretary and assistant board secretary respectively.

The Miami‐Dade Expressway Authority’s board of directors brings a broad cross‐section of transportation, business and professional expertise, as well as civic, environmental, county and state interest and commitment. Of the 13, 12 are volunteers, non‐paid local business and civic leaders. The 13th member is the Florida Department of Transportation District Six Secretary, who serves as an ex‐officio MDX board member. Of the 12 volunteers, Florida’s Governor appoints five of them and the Miami‐Dade board of County Commissioners appoints the remaining seven members.
