Cardinals Catcher Molina

Last night, June 19, 2013, the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-1 to increase their lead in the NL Central by 2.5 games. With the loss the Cubs fall to 29 wins and 41 losses and are 16 games out of first place. The Cardinals won last night’s game with the help of two players specifically, catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Jake Westbrook. Molina hit his fifth home run and Westbrook pitched seven innings while only allowing one run in the win. Molina broke the tie in the sixth inning when he blasted one to left field, to bring home himself and two other players for a 4-1 lead. Chicago pitcher Edwin Jackson had retired Molina at his first two times up at bat, but on the third he decided to show off his National League leading batting average of .365. Molina has easily put himself up for discussion for MVP honors, and his teammates certainly agree. Teammate Matt Carpenter stated that they call Molina a “joke”, because he is just so good. The one run by Chicago came in the second inning after a few errors were made by the Cardinals. Second baseman Matt Carpenter could not convert on a routine play to make a double play. It was his third error this season. Westbrook then walked a Cubs player to load the bases, and Anthony Rizzo made it home on a sacrifice bunt by Darwin Barney. Molina was also called with an error on that play when he lost control of the ball on his way to tag Rizzo out.
