New UK protein shake company Sativa Shakes has been officially recognised for the quality of its plant-based protein drink products by the food industry's leading awards. The small company's flagship product, Viva High Pro, is in the running to win the 'Best Cold Beverage' category in the Quality Food and Drink Awards 2013.

Alex Williams, Founder of Sativa Shakes, said: "We are delighted that the Quality Food and Drink Awards has recognised our Viva High Pro plant-based protein drink. It's great to see that non-dairy protein powders are becoming popular enough to feature in prestigious food industry awards. We are passionate about educating consumers about the many health and fitness benefits of taking plant-based, dairy- and lactose-free protein drinks."

Sativa Shakes was founded in 2012 and offers a range of high-quality, great-tasting protein powders suitable for vegans (but aimed at anyone who wants to improve body composition, sporting performance or general health). The products are sugar-free, low-carb and approved by The Vegetarian and Vegan Societies. All the ingredients are non genetically-modified and environmentally friendly.

With many people suffering lactose intolerances, or finding that dairy does not agree with them, plant-based protein powders offer an ideal solution. Sativa Shakes protein powders come from pea, soy, hemp and brown rice protein and their unique flavours are a firm favourite with consumers.

"The protein drink market has been dominated by whey for a long time but we are seeing the trend shifting," said Alex Williams. "We predict that plant-based protein is going to grow in popularity as people realise the health, diet and fitness benefits. This award nomination is a good stepping stone towards greater recognition for vegan protein powders and Sativa Shakes are delighted to be leading the way."

Viva High Pro (2013 Quality Food and Drink Awards nominee) is a blend of plant-based protein powders with more than 22g of protein per serving and low carbs. Viva Sativa is a hemp protein powder which contains a complete amino acid profile, both soluble and insoluble fibre and omegas 3, 6 and 9. Both products come in two flavour options and are naturally sweetened with Stevia, which is derived from a plant.

"We are looking to reward products and companies who are striving to offer consumers the very best," says the the Quality Food and Drink Awards on their website.

The Quality Food and Drink Awards are the most prestigious awards to recognise food and drink products on sale in UK grocery outlets. The judging panel includes expert food lecturers, chefs, food technologists and food writers. The awards ceremony will take place at The Grosvenor House Hotel, London, on 7th November 2013 when Sativa Shakes will discover how their Viva High Pro plant-based protein powder fared in the Best Cold Beverage' category.
