Irvine, CA (PRWEB) June 24, 2013
Erin Gruwell, who has earned a reputation for her award-winning commitment to the future of education, delivered the keynote address at the recent American Career College Commencement Ceremony that took place on June 22, 2013 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Ms. Gruwell’s impact as an agent of change runs deep. So deep, in fact, that her story attracted Hollywood’s attention. In January 2007, Paramount Pictures released Freedom Writers, starring two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank as Gruwell. The film is based on The Freedom Writers Diary, the New York Times bestseller that chronicled Gruwell’s extraordinary journey with 150 Long Beach high school students who had been written off by the education system. By fostering an educational philosophy that valued and promoted diversity, she transformed her students’ lives. With Gruwell’s support, her students overcame several obstacles faced by troubled teens, such as drugs and violence, and they soon became aspiring college students, published writers, and citizens for change.
American Career College (ACC) recently expanded its presence in Southern California by opening its doors in Downtown Long Beach at the historic Arts Building location. ACC’s commitment to improving the lives of its students, and the communities in which they serve through meaningful education mirrors the commitment of Ms. Gruwell, allowing her to be an ideal inspirational speaker for ACC’s Summer Class of 2013.
