According to an article in the June 2013 issue of Fitness Magazine entitled “Sun-Sational,” daily sunscreen use offers a host of unexpected benefits beyond protection against skin cancer. These include making the skin look younger, preventing pimples, boosting one’s mood, and providing a healthy glow. (go to goo.gl/8lWts)
“Most importantly,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills, “daily sunscreen use was shown in a recent Journal of Clinical Oncology study to reduce the risk of melanoma by 50 percent.”
According to the article, ninety percent of brown spots, saggy skin, and wrinkles are the result of DNA damage caused by sun exposure. Some of the latest sunscreens include anti-aging peptides to minimize wrinkles and vitamin C derivatives to minimize free radical damage. Contrary to popular belief, the sun does not dry out oily skin but actually makes blemishes worse by causing the body to ramp up oil production.
The article notes that it’s vital to protect certain areas that are often forgotten: the scalp (site of the deadliest melanomas), feet, lips, and ears. New FDA rules have made sunscreen labeling easier to understand. For example, broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB rays.
“I think the idea that a beachy fragrance will make us feel Zen-like is a bit far-fetched,” says Dr. Ourian. “What I do know with certainty is that I treat sun damaged skin on a daily basis. And one of the best ways to prevent sun damage is to use sunscreen every day.”
Dr. Ourian has been a pioneer in laser technology and non-invasive aesthetic procedures including Restylane, Juvéderm, Radiesse and Sculptra. These treatments are used for the correction or reversal of a variety of conditions such as acne, acne scars, skin discoloration, wrinkles, stretch marks, varicose veins, cellulite, and others.
