According to HVP on June 19 in the article Trustmark Supports New Consumer Codes Scheme, the organisation Trustmark has welcomed the new Consumer Codes Approval Scheme, which was launched last week by Trading Standards Institute. The scheme hopes to give customers additional confidence in the codes of practice conducted by trade associations and business organisations.
According to the Guardian, traders found to be breaking the law and breaching the codes set out in the Consumer Codes Scheme could face up to six months in prison and fines up to £5000 if cases are taken to magistrates’ courts, or up to two years in prison and unlimited fines if cases are more serious and taken to crown courts. The government aims to make the codes of the legislation law in 2014.
Trustmark supports the scheme and the organisation’s chairman, Liz Male, told HVP that:
"There is a great deal of symmetry between this scheme and the TrustMark scheme, which covers the domestic repair, maintenance and improvement sector, as we are both aiming to provide a strong and healthy consumer environment of trust whilst trying to eliminate poor trading practices and rogue traders from breaking the law and ripping off customers with shoddy work."
The experts at We Fix Now, who provide emergency plumbers in Tower Hamlets, throughout London and the surrounding counties, have a keen interest in developments in the industry. A spokesperson from the company shared their thoughts on the news:
"It is welcome news that the new codes aim to increase customers’ confidence whilst supporting those businesses that complete work to a high standard. The news that the codes should minimise rogue traders is a welcome one for the industry."
