New consumer research from Punchbowl.com also reveals 70% say they have eaten an entire bag of party snacks in one sitting and 46% have double dipped their chips at parties.

Today, Punchbowl.com, the leading celebrations site for moms, released new and surprising insights on the party snack food habits of Americans. Punchbowl conducted the survey to understand how consumers decide on and purchase snack foods for parties and also to reveal individual snacking behaviors.

According to the survey, consumers have a few unexpected snacking habits. Quite surprisingly, 17% of consumers admitted that they eat party snacks while in the bathroom, either on the toilet or in the shower. Punchbowl also found that more than a quarter of people snack while walking the aisles of the grocery store, 50% of people snack in bed, and 70% of consumers admitted that they have eaten an entire bag of party snack food in one sitting.

The survey found that chips reign in the world of party snacks. Tortilla chips top the list with 32% of people claiming this snack food as their favorite for parties, followed by potato chips with 25% of the population. Chips inevitably lead to double dipping, with 46% of consumers admitting to double dipping at parties.

“These survey results provide snack food marketers a deeper look into the celebrations market,” said Matt Douglas, CEO, Punchbowl. “We hope this new data sparks conversation about how to reach party hosts who spend billions on party snacks every year.”

Punchbowl’s snack food survey also revealed the following:

  •     25% of people say eating a snack stopped them from having a public meltdown
  •     83% of people look for party snack recipes online
  •     Flavor (selected by 72% of people) is the number one influencer when it comes to choosing snack foods for a party
  •     46% of women prefer ribbed chips over regular chips

Punchbowl conducted a 10-question survey of 2000 active users who hosted an event in the last 3 months. Survey results can be found in the white paper, “Mix & Mingle: 15 Ways Snack Brands Can Be The Life of the Party.” The free white paper offers exclusive insights on the $38 billion celebrations industry, and provides 15 strategies for brand marketers and media planners to effectively reach consumers at the exact moment they’re gearing up for a party.
