OnSomble, Inc. recently worked with Rush University College of Nursing to enhance awareness of professional role clarity and to highlight the importance of professional role competency in the nursing curriculum.
At the heart of the initiative was Dr. Maria O'Rourke's professional role conceptual framework. "The professional role demands nurses function as leaders, scientists, transferors and practitioners," notes Dr. O'Rourke. "Each of these competencies is crucial to the work of nurses as they gather information about patients (scientist), share their observations and insights with colleagues on the care team (transferor), make decisions regarding patient care (leader), and introduce new learning and innovation in the delivery of care (practitioner)."
Dr. Frank Hicks, assistant dean for generalist education and professor of adult health & gerontological nursing at Rush, spoke highly of Dr. O’Rourke’s work with Rush’s faculty and students, “Dr. O’Rourke’s enthusiasm and obvious knowledge in the area of professional role development was an inspiration to our faculty and students. She is able to relay the importance of this topic in a compelling and interesting way, and her passion is contagious.”
Dr. O'Rourke was particularly excited about Rush University's focus on strengthening professional role development content in the nursing curriculum. "It is essential nursing graduates understand their full professional role and capacity because it directly impacts the quality of care their patients will receive. I was honored to work with Rush in this important initiative."
