Charlotte, NC fluid power distributor Carolina Fluid Components (CFC) recently completed a project to upgrade their existing lighting systems to reduce electricity costs and improve lighting quality. At the same time, its reduced electricity usage has resulted in less greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production.

Southpoint Solutions worked with CFC to develop and implement this project utilizing the patented technology of Orion Energy Systems. The solution designed by Southpoint Solutions allowed CFC to replace over 324 inefficient T-12 strip light fixtures with Orion's energy efficient high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology, while still improving light levels and quality. Installation of controls on many of the new light fixtures allowed CFC to use even less energy and save even more money.

As a result of the project, CFC expects to cut its light-related electricity usage, and the associated costs, by almost 62 percent. An added benefit is that lower electricity usage means less fossil fuel emissions associated with electricity production. By completing this project, CFC has indirectly reduced the amount of air pollution by 69.7 tons of carbon dioxide which has an equivalent impact of saving 8,650 gallons of gasoline annually or planting 19 acres of trees.

Carolina Fluid Components, LLC has been providing fluid power solutions to industrial customers in the Carolinas since 1978. They have embraced technological advances and better business practices in order to remain the best choice for their customers. One such improvement to their business was the lighting project. CFC wanted to improve their lighting, save energy and become more modernized, according to Mark McDonald, General Manager for Carolina Fluid Components.

Southpoint Solutions worked diligently to provide the right technology and design to meet Carolina Fluid Components’ needs. “Southpoint was very responsive, moved quickly and wasn’t disruptive to our business operations which is only one reason why we enjoyed working with them on this project. The biggest factor we liked about working with Southpoint was that their proposal was extremely easy to read and understand. It may seem like a small thing but when you can clearly see the energy savings and what the outcome will look like, it was an easy decision for us,” stated McDonald.
