Following a recent Vancouver Sun article that featured Sheri Dettman and Associates, REMI advised its real estate agent readers to consider adding properties in tourism-heavy markets.

The Real Estate Marketing Insider announced the release of its weekly Local Spotlight feature, which highlights an individual real estate agent or small realty firm in a local market. REMI’s feature this week profiled Sheri Dettman, owner of a real estate firm in La Quinta, Calif., and applauded her for her efforts in attracting Canadian buyers to the nearby Palm Springs area.

Sheri Dettman is the owner and principle agent for her practice, Sherri Dettman & Associates, based in La Quinta, Calif. As a recent article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer pointed out, Dettman is taking advantage of the strong Canadian dollar and the historically-low home prices in California to attract Canadians. Although her practice addresses all aspects of the Southern California real estate market, much of her firm’s real estate advertisement is targeted toward Canada and getting Canadian investors interested in the Palm Springs-area property. Dettman has also taken advantage of some common personality traits among Canadian buyers. In a recent interview with the Vancouver Sun she said, “Canadians are generally a conservative lot. [They] are investing in a lifestyle for their family and friends, rather than just a home... [they] want to be able to enjoy good amenities and prefer newer developments with newer homes.” With its myriad tourist attractions, conservative political climate, and constant development of new vacation rental by owners, Palm Springs provides an ideal climate to sell to Canadian investors and homebuyers.

Real estate agents near tourism-heavy markets like Palm Springs often limit themselves to local customers, or those within the market’s home state. Often, agents forget that tourist markets are most popular with buyers and investors from far outside the local market. Dettman sets an example for other real estate agents in markets similar to La Quinta and Palm Springs by reaching out to investors beyond driving distance from her home market. REMI advises agents to take a cue from this week’s Local Spotlight, and think outside their area for attracting new buyers or investors.
