Charlottesville’s First Ever Downtown Mile Race

The fastest man and woman finisher will receive a cash prize of $1,000, while groups of 3 or more may register as a team and the fastest overall team will win a prize.

Notus Sports (http://www.NotusSports.com), a sports and event management company, announced today the Michie Tavern Downtown Mile Race and Healthy Living Expo as part of their American Heritage Race Series. The race is Charlottesville's first ever downtown mile race and will take place on Wednesday, July 24, 2013. There will be cash prizes for the top men and women finishers along with age group prizes. The fastest man and woman finisher will receive a cash prize of $1,000, while groups of 3 or more may register as a team and the fastest overall team will win a prize. Prizes will be given out at the awards ceremony at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion after the race concludes.

The Michie Tavern Downtown Mile starts at 7:00 pm on Jefferson St. by Lee Park, and finishes near the expo at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. It will also include a family mile race that will run the same course as the 1 mile race starting at 6:30 pm. The family race is un-timed, however participants will each receive a t-shirt, commemorative race bib and finishers' medal. The open mile race event will kick off with 3 waves: elite runners, runners, and walkers. The Michie Tavern Mile finishes with a post race concert at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, next to the finish line and Healthy Living Expo.

As part of the event, Notus Sports is partnering with lululemon athletica Charlottesville to host the Healthy Living Expo from 5:00-8:00pm at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion. The local lululemon showroom will be kicking off the post run festivities with a Yoga Jam. Other local organizations such as Opal Yoga, Smoothie King, tru PILATES, MedExpress and Whole Foods will participate as well. The free expo includes activities such as run and walk gait analysis, healthy eating displays, and other exhibits designed to promote and encourage healthy lifestyles.

“Our hope is that the Michie Tavern Downtown Mile will be one of the premier downtown mile races, modelled after the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York, The Minneapolis Mile, and the San Rafael Mile,” said Glen Slosson Founder and CEO of Notus Sports. “Designed to be a festival of running and healthy living, the Michie Tavern Downtown Mile will be an all inclusive race, featuring elites, recreational runners, walkers, and families. We hope to encourage healthy living habits while enjoying the beautiful and historic downtown area of Charlottesville!”

The Michie Tavern Mile Race is part of the American Heritage Race Series, designed to promote healthy living, community involvement and engagement with historically significant sites. The downtown mile race will benefit the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society, which nurtures and promotes awareness and appreciation of local history by encouraging the identification, collection, study, and preservation of the materials of history.
