GuideAdvisor.com has launched the “Top Guide in the World” contest, a competition designed to generate excitement about guiding and guided trips. The winner of the contest will win $100,000 to put towards their guiding business.
Over the next 12 months GuideAdvisor will be contacting guides around the world, as well as operators who employ guides, and informing them about the contest. Whether they are a mountain guide, a tour guide at a museum, a fishing guide or any other type of guide, they will have the opportunity to sign up at GuideAdvisor.com for free and post the types of trips and services they offer. Then, a short-list will be created from which the World’s Top Guide will be chosen and will receive $100,000 and bragging rights.
GuideAdvisor is an internet startup that’s creating the most comprehensive listing of guides on the planet. The founders believe guides, and their relationship with travellers, are even more important to the travel experience than location and activity so a human-focused app and website are being developed that will allow travellers, tourists and explorers to book guides directly and help create the best trips in the world.
“We are a group of travel and adventure enthusiasts who saw an opportunity to create something that would bring guides to the fore of the travel experience,” says CEO Rik Logtenberg. “There are many sites, apps and TV shows that focus on location, activity and price but guides always seem to get short changed. We want to prove to the world that a guided experience is a way better trip.”
To facilitate the contest, Guideadvisor staff will film and produce a video or write a profile that showcases an individual guide (or all of the guides employed by an operator), utilize the profile or video to market the guide on Guideadvisor.com and then use a specially-designed algorithm (that is based partly on certifications, experience and skill level, but mostly on feedback from customers) to rank guides and their businesses on the guideadvisor.com leader board. Next year we will award various prizes to the Top Guides of specific activities and/or locations as well as award the Top Guide in The World with $100,000.
“Our target date to launch the full Guideadvisor.com web site is September 2013 and the material we collect now with guides will help with that launch,” says Logtenberg. “After that the site will work like a booking agent, receiving 15% commission on trips that are booked. But unlike typical booking agents, we are experts at generating consumer demand and we plan to raise the profile of guides in the travel industry throughout the world.”
