Avid vintage rock poster collector Andrew Hawley, from Vintage Rock Posters, seeks 1965 Dr. Strange Pre-Avalon Ballroom Concert Posters. This poster was created for a show that happened before the popular concert series promoted by the Family Dog at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The show was at the Longshoremen Hall at Fishermen’s Wharf in San Francisco on Oct 16, 1965. According to Hawley, “The concert was a tribute to Dr. Strange a popular fictional superhero Marvel comic book character. The concert featured Jefferson Airplane, the Charlatans and Great Society. The show was put on by Family Dog, a loose collective of San Francisco nonconformists who wanted a rock concert that allowed dancing. The concert is important historically because it was an early contributor to the San Francisco 1960s music scene, and the concert poster used psychedelic graphics.”
Hawley continues, “There were two different posters made for the show. The rarest is a hand made silkscreen posters measuring 30x40 inches. Only five were produced. This poster features a drawing of the Charlatans with some hand painted lettering. The second version was printed on thick cardboard and was designed by Alton Kelly. This poster was printed in a larger quantities. Handbills were printed on various colors such as blue, green, and gold as well as black and white. The handbills measure about 8x10 inches are in similar in design as the larger concert posters.”
Hawley will pay $10,000 cash for either version of the Doctor Strange concert posters and $1,000 for the handbills. Any condition would be accepted. Please call 310-346-1965 or email andrew at vintageconcertposterbuyer.com.
