Chris and Natasha Ashton, co-founders and co-CEOs of Petplan pet insurance, the nation’s fastest-growing pet insurance provider, took home one of the top prizes Thursday night at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Gala. Petplan’s founders were presented with the top honor in the Retail & Consumer Products category for the Greater Philadelphia region, and are now in the running for the world’s most prestigious business award, the Entrepreneur of the Year award.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child, and this great honor recognizes the collective efforts of our ‘village’,” said Natasha Ashton. “From our esteemed board members, who believed in us from day one, to our extraordinary team members who go above and beyond every single day, to our policyholders across the country who trust us to protect their beloved pets, we thank every one of them for sharing in this adventure. We are excited to continue growing this ‘child’ into the first billion-dollar pet insurance company by offering the most comprehensive coverage for dogs and cats, along with expert pet health advice, to pet parents across the country.”

The Ashtons were among 1,700 nominees nationwide who were considered for the regional awards. Come November, they will join their fellow regional award winners in Palm Springs, CA, to attend the Ernst & Young Strategic Growth Forum, a weeklong gathering of high-growth, market-leading companies. The culmination of Forum is the Entrepreneur of the Year National Awards Gala, where the 2013 national finalists and winners will be named.

“It was with an enormous sense of pride and a great deal of pleasure that Natasha and I received Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Regional Award this past Thursday,” said Chris Ashton. “We’d also like to congratulate New York regional winners Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa, co-founders of Warby Parker. As fellow Wharton Business School alumni, we understand and share their passion for innovation and providing the best product in the market.”

Like the Ashtons, Warby Parker’s co-founders took part in the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Wharton Business Plan Competition, which the Ashtons won with their idea for Petplan in 2003.
