In celebration of Men’s Health Month (the month of June), Flax Seasoning discusses why it is so important for men to get rid of the infamous beer belly. Excess weight is one of the leading contributors to the health challenges men face. There are a number of key health challenges men can be prevent through proper nutrition and exercise.

Three of the top threats to men’s health are heart disease, cancer, and type-2 diabetes. One of the chief contributing factors to the onset of each of these ailments is excess body weight. For many men, excess weight is carried around their waist and is stored as belly fat. Excess belly fat is also known as the “beer belly” and it is not uncommon to see many men with this. Contrary to the popular misconception, you don’t need to consume alcohol to develop a beer belly; all it takes is poor dietary choices and inadequate exercise.

Many men are jovial about having a beer belly; however, the consequences are no laughing matter. There are two forms of body fat, subcutaneous fat which is just below the skin and is the most widely distributed fat in the body. The second type of fat, visceral fat is fat that surrounds the inner organs considered more threatening to health and well-being according to Mayo Clinic. Harvard Men’s Health Watch cites that visceral fat "impairs the body’s regulation of insulin, blood sugar, and cholesterol and leads to heart problems." Regardless of overall weight, excess visceral fat will increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, and type-2 diabetes.

Getting rid of belly fat can be accomplished by adopting a healthier lifestyle. According to Darren Baker, Chief Health Nut at Flax Seasoning, increasing physical activity by engaging in moderate to vigorous exercise 3 or 4 times each week with targeted core workouts will be instrumental in reducing belly fat. Eating more fruits and vegetables, minimizing consumption of fast-foods and prepackaged foods, and drinking plenty of water are a few dietary adjustments that will speedily reduce belly fat when combined with adequate exercise.
