The article, How usable are the UK’s top 10 mobile sites, published 19th June in Econsultancy, reveals that statistics gathered by IMRG and Experian Hitwise have shown the results to be fairly similar as on a desktop with one notable exception of Apple. It was also demonstrated that the Amazon UK and Amazon.com sites accounted for over 10% of mobile visits to retail sites in April 2013. Their closest rival, Argos came in at 2.3% of visits, followed by names such as Next, Tesco and Debenhams. One common problem across the ten sites however, were the checkouts, with long forms, compulsory registration and poor usability turning potential customers away.
Having built and optimised a number of e commerce websites, the team at Absolute Digital Media were naturally interested by the latest news. CEO, Ben Austin reflects on some possible reasons behind Amazon’s success.
“Amazon was one of the first retail sites to adapt to mobile, so it comes as no surprise that it occupies the top spot in this list. As well as creating mobile optimised sites, it has introduced a range of m commerce apps for different platforms. With mobile now accounting for 20% of the UK online retail market, it is clear that it is becoming more important to offer mobile friendly options.”
