I am thrilled to finally be able to offer my patients a way that they can say goodbye to their tattoos without having to wait months and months

Summer time is here and for many that means showing more skin than usual and when you have an embarrassing tattoo on your shoulder or ankle, it can get a little tricky. Those with unwanted ink on their bodies start to dread to the warmer weather, as it becomes much more difficult to cover up tattoos and other blemishes. While makeup concealer may work on occasion, there’s no chance of your cover-up staying put when you’re sweating or swimming. The gold standard treatment to rid of tattoos is laser tattoo removal using the Q-switched laser. Schweiger Dermatology in New York City is proud to offer two options for tattoo removal patients: the traditional Q-switched laser or a new—and much quicker—method called the R20 Technique.
The Q-switched laser works by targeting ink with short, high-energy laser pulses that break up the ink particles, allowing the body’s natural immune system then flush them out over time. While this method is extremely effective, it can also be frustrating as it may takes up to twenty office visits for the tattoo to be fully removed. Thankfully Dr. Eric Schweiger, the founding dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology in Midtown Manhattan, has found a new approach that allows for much speedier tattoo removal. The R20 Technique employs the same Q-switched laser, but uses it an alternative way. Rather than only doing one pass of the laser per office visit, four passes are completed. Patients are given a twenty minute break in between passes to allow for the white bubbles that appear after each pass to resolve. Once the bubbles subside, the laser can then effectively target the tattoo again.
"I am thrilled to finally be able to offer my patients a way that they can say goodbye to their tattoos without having to wait months and months," says Dr. Schweiger.
