On Saturday, June 29, 2013, Alderman George A. Cardenas, Chairman of the Chicago Health Committee, and the Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition will present their seventh annual family health and fitness fair ¡Vive tu Vida! Get up! Get Moving!® This event promotes Hispanic family physical activity and good nutrition for better health and wellness for people of all ages and all sizes. The event, which is FREE and open to the public, will be held at the McKinley Park Fieldhouse located at 2210 West Pershing Road in Chicago, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

"According to the Office of Minority Health, more than a third of Hispanic adults in the U.S. have excess weight. That is why it is so important that we as a community come together to hold events like ¡Vive tu Vida! Get up! Get Moving!® As Chairman of the Committee on Health and Environmental Protection, I believe that we must continue to encourage members of our community to live a healthier lifestyle," stated Alderman Cardenas. "By promoting exercise and healthy eating in a fun and entertaining way, ¡Vive tu Vida! Get up! Get Moving!® is working to change the lives of Latinos in Chicago and around the country."

“This event has saved lives. Thousands of Chicagoans have received health screenings, joined an exercise group or sports team, or learned about health services available to them,” said the Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition’s Executive Director, Esther Sciammarella. “In our seventh year we are proud to have over 65 partners joining us to provide free services and a terrific day of health and fun for the whole family.”

¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving!® demonstrates the power of culture, family, and community, and better health for all. The Chicago event will feature health screenings and information including blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and kidney disease; vision and dental exams; and, Medicare and Medicaid enrollment details. There will also be activities for the whole family including a fitness walk; tennis clinics provided by the U.S. Tennis Association; exercise demonstrations; a soccer tournament; Mexican folkoric dance performances; and, raffles for sporting events, concerts, bicycles, and other prizes.

“The support we receive from Newman’s Own Foundation and the Health Foundation for the Americas allow us to serve 20,000 people at community family health events this year, like the one this weekend in Chicago,” said Dr. Jane L. Delgado, President and CEO of the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, the nation’s leading Hispanic health advocacy group, and author of The Latina Guide to Health and Buena Salud® guide series.

“We are proud to support the National Alliance for Hispanic Health in providing community-based health and nutrition outreach,” said Robert Forrester, president of Newman’s Own Foundation. “One of the Foundation’s priorities is the support of nonprofits whose focus is on nutrition, and ¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving!® works to address a broad range of needs on the local level.”

All participants of ¡Vive tu vida! Get Up! Get Moving!® Chicago will be eligible to register for the National Alliance for Hispanic Health’s Buena Salud® Club. This free membership club is designed to promote healthy lifestyles by providing year-round reliable and confidential health information and provider referrals.
