It’s gratifying to play a small part in helping a promising journalist reach her potential

Intermarkets, Inc., a full-service digital advertising agency, is pleased to announce that Lee Martin is the winner of the sixth annual Intermarkets-Lucido Journalism Scholarship. Martin, a graduate of James Wood High School in Winchester, VA, is receiving the $5,000 scholarship for her insightful essays and academic excellence.

Intermarkets created the Scholarship to recognize an exceptional graduating senior from a Virginia high school who understands and promotes the importance of non-biased journalism in the United States media.

"Miss Martin’s essays were well written and showed her passion, integrity, and understanding of the mission of our scholarship," said Chief Executive Officer Kevin Lucido. "It’s gratifying to play a small part in helping a promising journalist reach her potential."

Martin will be studying communications and journalism at Christopher Newport University. Her interest in writing and journalism was sealed when she recognized that she enjoyed interviewing and listening to people’s stories. Martin said, "My internship at the Winchester Star newspaper with Adrian O’Connor, the Editorial Page Editor, was one of the best opportunities I’ve had for learning about responsible journalism. When I heard I had won the Scholarship, I jumped up and down! Thank you so much."

Applicants were judged on their academic accomplishments, writing samples, and their review of a biased current news article and how it should be changed.

The Northern Virginia Community Foundation manages the annual Scholarship.
