We had a fantastic event and through the hard work of Charlie's friends, we raised over $20,000 for the Charlie Wysocki Benefit Fund.
Beltsville, MD (PRWEB) June 28, 2013
About one mile down the road from where legendary running back Charlie Wysocki used to play for the Maryland Terps, a group of former NFL players including Eric Sievers, Dave DA’ddio, Dave Pacella, John Tice, Kevin Glover, and Stan Gelbaugh, gathered to support Charlie’s struggles with mental illness. The fundraising event at Old Line Fine Wine and Bistro in Beltsville, Md., brought in more than $20,000 for a great local cause that addresses an issue quickly gaining national awareness.
An estimated 26% of adult Americans have a diagnosable mental disorder, according to the Denver Post. So when a former Philadelphia Eagles football player called the Prince George’s store manager, there was no hesitation.
Larry Pendleton, Old Line Fine Wine & Bistro manager states: “When Dave Pacella, a former University of Maryland player called and asked if we would consider hosting an event to benefit his old friend who had suffered from mental illness, we did not hesitate. We had a fantastic event and through the hard work of Charlie’s friends, we raised over $20,000 for the Charlie Wysocki Benefit Fund.”
Close to 100 people attended the evening bash where the bistro served up their culinary favorites such as their light hors d’oeuvres, craft beer and 90-point wines. The gathering also featured a meet and greet with the University of Maryland Head Football Coach, Randy Edsall as well as a book signing with Charlie Wysocki and C.T. Walters for the book, Saddle Up, Charlie: Charlie Wysocki’s Journey from Gridiron Glory into Mental Illness.
University of Maryland alum guests, as well as football fans and mental health advocates who attended, had the opportunity to bid on a bevy of silent auction items (e.g. golf outings at the UMD Golf Course, autographed football jerseys, photographs and among many other athletic prizes) to help raise funds for the Charlie Wysocki Fund.
