“I’m striving to recreate in my paintings the sensation of joy and longing I experienced in the field.”
Carmel-by-the-Sea, California (PRWEB) June 29, 2013
The Winfield Gallery presents the exhibition Intimate Lands, recent paintings by Ann Lofquist.
A Lofquist painting begins with a search for a subject which moves her -- one which usually involves driving many miles along back-country roads seeking the right combination of terrain and atmosphere. Ann then tries to capture in a plein-air oil sketch. This intense experience nourishes the larger canvases which are executed in the studio.
Her recent California landscapes represent a new subject matter, inspired by her relocation from Maine to the West Coast. These new landscapes usually depict one of two possible subjects: the stands of old-growth oak and sycamore trees, or the transition between the suburban sprawl and the native chaparral. The more urban subjects reflect the surroundings of her community, where new tracts abut a dry landscape still teeming with rattlesnakes, coyotes, and mountain lions. The juxtaposition of the enduring and the ephemeral is everywhere in evidence in Southern California.
“Lofquist’s paintings don’t recall events as much as they recall the nuances of light on the landscape in rain and snow, and the colors of the changing seasons. Her paintings caused me to be more aware of those things.”
