Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) June 29, 2013
Veronica Dunne, from Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, CA, was named Artist of the Year at the National Youth Art awards in Los Angeles, CA, on June 6, 2013. More than 300 productions from 10 states were reviewed. To be nominated for the category of Artist of the Year, a student under the age of 18 has to have three leads in three different shows in the span of one year. Veronica was Sally Bowles in Cabaret, the Stage Manager in Our Town and Ariel in Footloose. The National Youth Arts’ judges attended all of the shows and honored Veronica with this prestigious award based upon her performances. Veronica was thrilled by the honor and said, “I feel so blessed. Working hard is very important to me - I love what I do so much! This is more than a passion to me; it's everything.“
In addition to the Youth Artist award, Veronica was also the recipient of last month’s highly esteemed 25th Annual Music Center Spotlight Award held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, CA. Along with 600 other students, Veronica was entered into the non-classical voice category for this teen performing artists competition and scholarship opportunity. She prepared and performed two songs for judges. 600 students, selected from more than 2,200 applicants, were narrowed down to 60 and then 20, and then the top two became the grand prize finalists who performed at the 3000 seat venue. Veronica took top honors in the non-classical voice category and sang “Moments in the Woods” from Into the Woods. The 12 students honored in different categories at the final gala were awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships. Veronica found her passion in theater and voice and said, “It was a wonderful experience, and I was so overwhelmed to be on that stage.”
Veronica thanks her parents for teaching her “to live out loud” and feels immensely blessed by the many people, including acting voice coaches and teachers, who have helped build her career and her life. Studying online with Oaks Christian School for the past two years allowed Veronica greater flexibility with her studies and created opportunities for her to pursue her dreams in acting. During the past two years, she was also the winner of the “Search for Cinderella” contest at the El Portal Theater and performed in the Cinderella production with Neil Patrick Harris. Other awards have included Oaks Christian School Thespian of the Year, the Four Star Theater Alliance Award, the Broadway World “Person to Watch” Award and the Ovation Award. Her professional career includes television appearances on Disney’s Sweet Life on Deck and Austin & Ally, ABC’s According to Jim, Hallmark’s Wild Hearts, as well as projects in production. In response to all her recent recognition, Veronica quoted a favorite scripture, Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” She said, “I have been given so much; I will never take it for granted. I have worked really hard to be where I am, and I will certainly not stop now.”
Finally, Veronica has been accepted to Carnegie Mellon University for Musical Theater in Pittsburgh, PA, for the fall of 2013. 5,000 prospective students auditioned, and Veronica was one of five girls who was accepted. Carnegie Mellon is considered a top musical theater school worldwide because of the incredible training and connections the University has with the musical theater and acting worlds. Veronica noted, “This is one of the top schools for academy award winning alumni, and being accepted there is such an incredible honor.”
