Head graphic designer Malcolm Buttel from award-winning full-service marketing agency Oxygen, has visited Blundell's School in Tiverton to assist a group of budding year 10 GCSE design students in the creation of innovative products for the future.

It's really important for the students to be able to talk to someone who designs for businesses every day...Mr Buttel's expertise was invaluable.

Part of the students’ GCSE coursework requires them to follow the process of designing a product for a target market. Mr Buttel started by giving the 15 year-olds an insight into how design works in the business world and took their questions. He then assisted them in the development of their own individual projects offering feedback and advice on their product designs.

Commenting on the experience he said, “It was good to be able to pass some skills on, and great to be around the students' huge energy and enthusiasm for the subject. Design is important. Good design can definitely make the world a better place. ”

Mrs Gil Armstrong Williams, Art and Design Technology teacher, Blundell's School said, “It's really important for the students to be able to talk to someone who designs for businesses every day and to see how all the elements come together from a nucleus of an initial idea. Mr Buttel's expertise was invaluable in assisting them to develop their ideas and to meet specification goals and client demands more effectively.”

Mrs Armstrong Williams also thanked Mr Buttel for giving up his time to advise and inspire the students adding, “They were so impressed with him and sad that he couldn't stay longer. It was a very valuable experience for them.”
