Blackpool's Council are looking at introducing video-led physical exercise programme which would be shown in classrooms to accompany the school breakfast scheme previously launched. Specifically designed for primary schools, the programme is intended to be streamed from the internet on to whiteboards and avoids the need for extra training and costly exercise equipment. The sorts of activites included on the videos include salsa, street dance and cheerleading. Gymkit UK, a leading fitness equipment supplier are in favour of such moves as they strive towards creating a more active population.
Nicole Saunders, Gymkit UK employee said, "I have a little boy who is currently at primary school and I think this sounds like a good idea. It's tough sitting a desk all day so I think it'd be nice for the children to a little exercise here and there even if it's just to wake them up a bit! More importantly, I think it is crucial that children get in to the habit of exercising regularly at a young age as it is then more likely that they will maintain a healthy lifestyle when they are older." Gymkit UK's main aim is to provide affordable, high quality used gym equipment so that people can set up a home gym and therefore exercise when it's convenient in the comfort of their own home. They believe that a more accessible exercise regime will result in a more effective regime in that it will be completed more frequently. Furthermore, it is a far more cost effective way of exercising as gym membership fees are avoided. Howard Braband, Managing Director and founder of the company said, "I'm all for schemes like this one. Far too many children sit at home playing computer games all days. It's important for them ot be active, firstly for health reasons but also because exposure to exercise at a young age will hopefully make it more of the norm when they are older".
Gymkit UK has been trading since 2001 and has seen great success in the last 12 years. They are one of the few companies that have thrived from economic downturn as their products provide a cheaper alternative to gym memberships which can be as much as £90 a month.
