Petrol theft is a significant issue for petrol retailers in the UK but with the use of a CCTV security system and Automatic Number Plate Recognition it is possible to try and combat these thefts.

102 drivers attempted to escape petrol forecourts without paying between January 1, 2012, and January 1, 2013, according to a Freedom of Information request made by the Shropshire Star published June 23.
The paper reports that offences averaged at two a week, with only 19 being resolved and sanctions taken against those involved.
The West Mercia Police report stated that there were around 250 reports of people making off without payment from Petrol Stations in Shropshire, but the large majority of these were found to be genuine errors, with no intent to commit an offence and payment made soon after.
A spokesman for BP told the Shropshire Star: “Drive-offs continue to be a problem. BP works closely with the police to identify offenders through the use of sophisticated CCTV cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems. These initiatives have helped to reduce losses.”
