Nate Ekhoff’s story is one of both success and sadness.

Nate Ekhoff made the Ponderosa High School Freshman B football team as a kicker/punter in 2007. He worked he way on to the Freshman A team by the end of that season. As a sophomore, Nate made the Varsity team as a kicker but was limited to kickoffs and extra points. Nate was Varsity full-time kicker as a junior.

His senior year, Nate handled all kicking/punting duties and earn Colorado 1st Team 4A All-State Kicker Award from the Denver Post on December 26, 2010. He was being actively recruited by six DII & junior colleges. Nate was not an athlete that wanted to stand on a DI sideline for 2 -3 years waiting for an opportunity. His plan was to kick at a JC or DII school for two years and then transfer to a DI school.

However, Nate was diagnosed with Leukemia on January 11, 2011. On July 20, 2011, he was admitted to Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHC) for a bone marrow transplant. Nate was readmitted to CHC due to complications to the bone marrow transplant on September 26, 2011.

After a five month stay at CHC, Nate passed away on February 26, 2012.

Nate finished his senior year as Prom King and was able to walk with his class at High School Graduation.

Organizers of the Nate Elkhoff Kicking Camp Event say their ‘mission’ is to provide an affordable one-day instructional camp for Colorado high school student-athletes. They plan to make this camp an annual event which raises enough money to provide at least one $1000 scholarship each year (or more) to a Colorado high school kickers, punters or snappers attending a DII or Junior College (JC).
