Solid Concepts used Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) to build robot components for the newest experience at The Tech in San Jose titled “Social Robots.” The experience is a design challenge that invites visitors to build custom robots. The Tech is the only place you can design, build, and program a real robot using different cubes that are attached to a pre-formed base.
“The experience gives visitors a low risk environment with a lot of support where they can actually build a robot,” explained Linda Antonopoulos, Director of Corporate Relations at the museum. “Hands on activities and challenges are the best way to learn, and these robots engage and appeal to visitors, while fostering collaboration and problem solving skills.”
The experience is designed to appeal to all ages. Visitors can scan their Tech Tag and take a souvenir picture or video of their robot to view once they are home. Solid Concepts manufactured the colorful little cubes used to compose the robots using SLS, a 3D Printing (or additive manufacturing) technology. SLS uses a bed of powdered nylon and a CO2 laser to sinter material together in increasing layers. The robots are fun, colorful, and truly one of kind. The exhibit is open all summer.
