True innovation comes from a company’s workforce. But, are companies providing an environment that attracts top talent and allows employees to be innovative?
A recent study by one of the largest privately held staffing companies confirms a majority of employers are investing in employee development.
According to a hiring trends survey of 323 employers in the U.S. and Canada, Express Employment Professionals found that more than half -- 58 percent -- of companies have an employee development program in place. And, 76 percent said they believe their company effectively identifies which employees need to improve their competencies and skills.
However, according to a 2012/2013 Global Talent Management Rewards Study by Towers Watson, an HR consulting company, 72 percent of companies claim to have difficulties attracting critical-skill employees.
“Without a focus on employee development, companies can have a hard time recruiting and retaining top talent. Organizations can easily lose their most productive and innovative team members to competitors,” said Gary Gallagher, owner of the Asheville Express office. “If employees aren’t growing, they’re looking for other employment opportunities that will support their desire for improvement.”
The good news for employees is 96 percent of companies responding to the Express survey indicated they focus on employee development offer on-the-job training, leadership coaching and mentoring. Other training programs they offer include company workshops, professional conferences, apprenticeships, cross training, formal classroom training and e-learning.
According to the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), 75 percent of executives say mentoring was a key factor to their career success. Alarmingly, ASTD predicts that 35 percent of employees who aren’t mentored search for new jobs within a year.
“Employee engagement is vital to the success and future of your company,” Gallagher said. “And, there is no better way to establish loyalty than by developing your employees into top talent.”
