The huge Light segment lost share and volume as most of its major brands struggled to gain any traction in spite of significant investment in marketing and promotional support. Light Beer is now down to under 50% of consumption. New product success was not enough to prevent A-BInBev or MillerCoors sales and share from sliding further during the year though the two companies still hold almost two thirds of all US beer sales. Each company has been steadily building its presence in the craft beer segment in order to bolster its portfolio. Despite volume loses, the leading brewers were able to increase their profitability during the year, thanks to further bouts of cost-cutting and another round of above inflation price increases from October. Imports grew their share of consumption for the fourth straight year rising to almost 15% of sales with much of the growth driven by new introductions including a rapid expansion of sales from countries and less traditional beer exporters which have hitherto not enjoyed a significant share of US sales.

The Mexican economy appears to be recovering well, demonstrating stable growth in 2012. This proved very fortunate for the beer industry, which was able to record 2% growth in the year.
Lower average temperatures were experienced throughout 2012, but in spite of this, the beer market performed well. New beverage control measures in 2013 will enhance the transparency of product contents on labelling in Mexico. The on-premise channel has recorded growth in 2012 as consumers return to a more social atmosphere with friends and family away from home. The Mexican beer market is set to change dramatically once A-BInBev and GrupoModelo finalize the details on the proposed acquisition. There are potentially some legal issues that would need to be resolved before the merger stabilizes, however.

Long-term, there will be a continued increase in the number of hand crafted beers, microbreweries and exotic beer restaurants. Singaporeans are now more adventurous and there has recently been an explosion in the number of foreign labels available. The key brands in the market during 2012 were Tiger, Carlsberg Green Label and Heineken. Marketing activities of all major brands focused on the Lunar New Year and year end festivities. Beer imports grew just over 4% in 2012, thanks to increasing demand for a wider variety of choices. Exports also grew by 4%, fuelled by growth in regional demand. A large proportion of beer is consumed on-premise given the high disposable income of locals, rising expatriate levels and the booming tourist industry. This will continue into the future given the government's strong call to promote the food, beverage and tourism sectors.
