As part of a series of articles on Facebook censorship and circumvention, idcloak presents two effective strategies for discovering a Facebook IP address.
On internet connections where Facebook is blocked or censored, the social media site is sometimes only blocked by domain name (facebook.com) and not by IP address, meaning users of the connection may bypass censorship simply by entering the Facebook IP (e.g. 123.456.789.12) rather than the URL (facebook.com).
The first method presented in the article is the most highly recommended: it enables the user to find the Facebook IP address closest to their location, thereby maximizing site loading speeds. The article explains how the Ping function in Command Prompt can identify which Facebook IP address is allocated to the user’s geographical region.
The second means of finding a Facebook IP address is through a free IP lookup service. One is recommended in the article.
A minor downside to using a lookup service is that it only presents Facebook’s primary Californian IP address, and access to this from other parts of the planet may be slow. Nonetheless, the option is ideal for users who do not have the administrative rights on their machine to access Command Prompt, as is often the case on shared computers in offices.
A link at the bottom of the article takes the user to two walk-throughs which explain how a user may deploy the Facebook IP address to circumvent blocks on the site.
On this form of censorship circumvention, Robin Welles of the idcloak research team had the following to say, “These methods are pretty primitive. They only work when the filters blocking access to the site are set up in the most offhand way. Most quality content filter systems will block the IP addresses in addition to the domain name, rendering the IP tactic useless. But it’s still worth a try, as success will give full and often very fast access to the site with no compatibility issues.”
In situations where entering a Facebook IP address does not bypass blocks, the article recommends proxy services. The best of these, the VPN site unblocker, is due for release by idcloak in two weeks’ time. An Early Bird discount is currently available on idcloak.com.
