Clapham Junction train station’s new lighting includes an intelligent control system so that light is only used when needed, according to a report named 'Energy-saving lighting pulls into Clapham Junction' by Business Green (2nd Sept). The light level is determined by train timetables, passenger presence and the amount of natural light. Lights are dimmed when the station is not being used, meaning energy is not wasted.
It is estimated that the new system will cut lighting costs by around 35 percent. This is part of a wider project by South West Trains and Network Rail aimed at reducing energy and increasing efficiency. Using a variety of energy-saving schemes across stations, the aim is to cut emissions by 25 percent per passenger by the end of the decade. Solar panels have also been installed at Kings Cross and Blackfriars stations.
Amy Dickinson, Environment Manager at the South West Trains / Network Rail Alliance, commented:
"Reducing our energy consumption is a challenging but crucial aspect of our business… Intelligent lighting has enabled us to save, on average, 20 per cent at each location."
A representative for Lights 4 Living, who provide high quality home lighting solutions, commented on the news:
“It is extremely encouraging that large organisations are choosing energy-saving options when it comes to lighting. This will save them money, and in turn the customer, but is also environmentally friendly. Companies need to focus their corporate responsibility towards these kinds of emission-reducing solutions. You can do this in your home too by choosing energy-saving light bulbs and monitoring your usage so that you only use as much energy as you need to.”
