The Pradaxa lawsuit lawyers at Wright & Schulte LLC, an experienced law firm representing the victims of defective drugs, report that more than 1,500 alleged victims of Pradaxa bleeding have filed claims in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, since the multidistrict litigation for Pradaxa lawsuits was first established in August 2012. All of the claims pending in the Southern District of Illinois allege that the drug’s maker, Boehringer Ingelheim , failed to provide adequate warnings about its serious risk, and in particular, the lack of an antidote for Pradaxa bleeding . Pradaxa is a blood thinner that was approved in October 2010 to prevent stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has long maintained that Pradaxa is as safe as warfarin, an anti-coagulant which has been in use for decades. But while both blood thinners can cause episodes of serious internal bleeding, hemorrhaging from warfarin can be easily stopped with the administration of vitamin K. Unfortunately, there is currently no easy method to stop Pradaxa bleeding. In December 2013, Bloomberg News reported that Pradaxa “has been linked to more than 500 U.S. deaths over a two-year period.” According to a study issued by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) the following month, Pradaxa patients may be nearly 5 times as likely to die if they suffer from internal bleeding compared to those treated with warfarin.

According to court documents, 1,525 plaintiffs have filed over 1,400 Pradaxa bleeding claims in the proceeding underway in the Southern District of Illinois. The first Pradaxa lawsuit will go to trial on August 11, 2014. This will be followed by three additional Pradaxa bellwether trials to begin on November 3, 2014, January 5, 2014 and February 6, 2014. U.S. District Judge David Herndon, who is overseeing the federal Pradaxa bleeding litigation, has scheduled a Case Management Conference for September 4, 2013.
