Chicken is one of the most “industrialized” products in our food supply. High volume chicken production is designed for maximum efficiency and maximum profits, while animal welfare tends not to be a priority. The results are overcrowding, disease, and observable unhappiness for the animals involved, all of which impacts taste.
Similarly, the industrialization of beef production has led to a market place filled with cattle raised on corn, hormones and antibiotics in order to increase yield. Such practices greatly affect the nutritional and flavor qualities of the beef produced. Although one or two retailers per market carry grass fed beef, it’s very difficult to find a wide variety of cuts in most cities across America. This is surprising for a product category that is growing at 40% a year and boasts significant health benefits.
Beetnik has entered into agreements with both Jacobs Bastrop Ranch and Dewberry Hills Farm to supply Beetnik with pasture raised grass fed beef, and pasture raised organic chicken. Beetnik founders David Perkins & Carey Balzer have acquired a significant financial interest in both Jacobs Bastrop Ranch and Dewberry Hills Farms to ensure high quality sources of grass fed beef and pasture raised chicken.
Jacobs Bastrop Ranch CEO and co-owner Ms. Pati Jacobs is a well-known and well-regarded rancher of grass fed beef based in Bastrop, Texas. Jacobs Bastrop Ranch procures grass fed cattle from certified ranchers who adhere to the finest standards of animal care and who participate in a comprehensive monitoring program.
Dewberry Hills Farm, a company highly regarded by top restaurant chefs in Austin, is run by Jane & Terry Levan, who founded the farm. The farm is based in Lexington, Texas, where the Levan’s raise chicken compassionately and with a deep appreciation of the gift they give us. “By managing the pastures properly and rotating our chickens, we naturally fertilize and restore the earth. And we raise really good chicken,” said Jane Levan.
“We’re fanatical about the whole food supply chain, all of which starts on the land,” said Beetnik Founder & CEO David Perkins. “We place a high importance on taste, supply relationships, and the nutritional and environmental impact of the choices we make for our customers. Our customers are people who care about these issues, and we appreciate that. We’re very proud to be associated with Jacobs Bastrop Ranch and Dewberry Hills Farm and we’re excited to have partners that share our passion.”
