This month marks 50 years of the lava lamp, according to the article ‘Groovy, man: Lava lamps mark 50th anniversary’ by the Montreal Gazette (2nd Sept). Developed during the ‘60s, the lamp enjoyed huge popularity due to its innovation and psychedelic effect. It was designed by British inventor Edward Craven-Walker, who was inspired by a liquid-filled egg timer he came across in a pub. It was originally marketed as an “exotic conversation piece” as the inventor realised the potential for such an item in ‘60s Britain.
The lava lamp uses two liquids of different densities. The heavier of the two sinks to the bottom but, when heated by the lamp, its density decreases and it floats back up to the top. The rocket-style design of the lamp reflects a fascination with sci-fi during the decade in which man walked on the moon. The invention was featured in television shows such as Doctor Who, but Craven-Walker’s second wife, Christine Baehr, said they knew they had made it when they were informed that Ringo Starr had bought one of their lamps. Under the name Mathmos, lava lamps are still manufactured in Britain using Craven-Walker’s formula, and are still as popular as ever.
Anthony Vox, a collector of Mathmos products, commented on the lamp’s enduring design:
"I think it's the motion within the lamp: the way that it flows, how it's anti-repetitive, how it's a mixture of light and chaos blending together. It kind of pulls people in and before you know it, you've spent 15 minutes looking at it."
A representative from Lights 4 Living, who supply quality home lighting throughout the UK, commented on the anniversary:
“It’s amazing to see how enduring the lava lamp’s design has been. We sell several versions in different colours, and they are always very popular. People want lighting that is stylish as well as functional, and the lava lamp provides a retro feel to a room. The coloured light creates mood lighting and watching the movement within the lamp can keep people occupied for hours! This isn’t just a light source, it’s a statement piece.”
