The new lamp, from design studio Kutarq, uses illusion to make a flat-pack seem more substantial, according to the article ‘An Optical Illusion Makes This Flat-Pack Lamp Look Not So Flat’ by Gizmodo Australia (5th Sept). Flat-packed products are easier to ship and transport, and are also often cheaper. However, this can sometimes require sacrifices in terms of design and aesthetic. The Moitie lamp on the other hand has found a clever way to offer both style and functionality.
The Moitie consists of a single fluorescent tube in the shape of half a traditional lamp. This is then placed against a mirror (which is included) to make up the lamp’s other half. The mirror also reflects light into the room, increasing and improving illumination. This is all mounted on a chic wooden, semi-circular base. The lamp is currently a one-off but this may change if there is significant interest. It will be shown at Paris Design Week from 9th to 15th September 2013.
