The chandelier was designed by Omer Arbel and has been installed by Canadian brand, Bocci, according to Dezeen article ‘Bocci 28.280 at the V&A’ (13th Sept). The design, named the 28.280, is being shown as part of the London Design Festival. It consists of 280 of Bocci’s ‘28’ lights, which see illumination encased in multi-coloured hand-blown glass spheres. These are suspended using copper wires, which shine in the lights’ glow.
The chandelier descends more than 30 metres, starting from the ceiling of the museum’s first floor gallery and through a hole in the floor to finish in the main atrium. It is meant as an exploration of design and of the novel fabrication process involved in the ‘28’ lights. The glass blowing technique involves the introduction and then removal of air pressure in a glass matrix, which is intermittently heated and then quickly cooled. This results in a distorted spherical shape, containing a further collection of inner shapes and a light source.
Arbel commented on the installation:
"We have always dreamed of mounting a light installation in a very very tall space... In the world of ideas, a tall space is the most appropriate environment for our pieces (abstractly speaking, I could say the ONLY environment for our pieces). Hence, to have the opportunity to finally build a piece in a very tall space, and at the V&A no less, really excites us on both a personal and professional level.”
Lights 4 Living supply high quality home lighting solutions, including a collection of chandeliers, both traditional and contemporary. A representative for the company commented:
“We are very excited to see all the exhibits at the London Design Festival, and this installation is especially intriguing. Chandeliers can make a stunning statement piece, and are a stylish way to provide illumination. They are particularly effective in a very large space, especially when there is a high ceiling, such as at the V&A. Arbel’s design is a beautiful example of the artistic capacity of good lighting.”
