Netsmart recognizes the severity of the suicide problem and urgent need to act now when it comes to suicide awareness and prevention.
Overland Park, KS (PRWEB) September 17, 2013
In conjunction with Suicide Awareness Month, Netsmart today announced plans for an online suicide awareness/prevention course for clinicians and the addition of suicide alerts and risk assessments to its enterprise Care Record™ (Electronic Health Record) solutions.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 38,000 Americans commit suicide each year, which equates to 105 people each day. In fact, suicide occurs every 13.7 seconds and the impact reaches beyond the person who dies by suicide to the larger circle of families, friends, co-workers and others in the community.
Netsmart is partnering with suicide expert Dan Reidenberg, Psy.D., FAPA, FACFEI, CRS, BCPC, CMT, executive director of Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE), to develop an online educational course that teaches clinicians how to handle the challenging topics of suicide and suicide risk management processes. Dr. Reidenberg, who is also managing director of the National Council for Suicide Prevention, is working with Netsmart to develop new decision support tools that will be bundled with standard suicide screenings and suicide assessments, enabling Netsmart to provide its clients with critical resources directly at the point of clinical care.
The training component of the Netsmart initiative was launched today at CONNECTIONS2013, Netsmart’s annual client conference, held Sept. 16-21 in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Reidenberg is at the conference to share his insights and offer additional training and education, including a presentation, “Healthcare Suicide Prevention and Education.”
“As a leader in health and human services and a partner to clinicians who work on the front lines of behavioral and public health, Netsmart recognizes the severity of the suicide problem and urgent need to act now when it comes to suicide awareness and prevention,” said Bill Connors, MSW, senior vice president and general manager, Behavioral Health, Netsmart. “We’re proud to offer this innovative suicide prevention intervention training provided to behavioral and public health providers at CONNECTIONS2013 and to broader audiences online. Surprisingly, not many clinicians are trained specifically in suicide awareness and assessment. The scope of training that we’re offering is unique and I believe will go a long way toward saving lives and helping people in need.”
The online course, expected to be available following CONNECTIONS2013, will initially share national statistics and general warning signs of suicidal behavior. The training will then delve deeper into methods of assessment and the critical topic of direct questions. The course joins the growing library of courses offered via myLearningPointe, Netsmart's comprehensive suite of online training and education resources for the health and human services community.
The suicide decision support tools, to be jointly developed by Netsmart and Dr. Reidenberg, will incorporate known suicide characteristics and nationally-used suicide screenings and assessments. Netsmart's CareRecord solutions will pair client data with often-hidden aspects of an EHR to better provide support prompts, alerts and care direction. Netsmart has tightened the connection between research and EHRs to incorporate best practices and well-established research in the development of its CareRecord solutions.
“According to the World Health Organization, more than one million people die by suicide each year. Netsmart and their leadership are taking a powerful step forward to educate, create awareness and bring about change to help reduce the burden of suicide in America,” said Dr. Reidenberg. “I’m pleased to partner with them to provide training to their clients nationwide who are leaders in behavioral and public health. It’s a meaningful opportunity to be able to put these helpful tools and training resources directly into the hands of those who can save lives.”
Netsmart is also pleased to be a partner of Take 5 to Save Lives, a project of the National Council for Suicide Prevention. Take 5 is an online public awareness and education campaign that encourages everyone to take 5 minutes to help prevent the suicide of a friend or loved one.
