Many wait eagerly for apple season. This is the time of year when the best and tastiest apples are at an apple-lover’s fingertips. King Kullen, Long Island’s own grocery store, is excited that it is now apple season. This time of year, King Kullen typically carries over 12 different varieties of apples, with the most popular being Honeycrisp and Gala varieties.

The New York apple forecast for 2013 shows a tremendous rebound from last year’s crop, which was decimated by early frosts. “With an 85 percent increase, New York State is expected to have 32 million bushels this year over last year’s 17.3 million. This 32 million is a 9 percent increase over the five year average,” said Rich Conger, Director of Produce and Floral. Based on this exceptional crop surplus, the apple cider industry will also be able to lower their prices.

For the freshest apples, King Kullen teams up with great New York State growers, such as Hudson River Fruit, a fourth generation apple grower and distributor in Milton, N.Y. that has been distributing fresh apples for 50 years. Their orchards, one of which is over 100 years old, provide the highest quality apples and varieties.

King Kullen shoppers will find the widest selection of apples available and can purchase 5 pound tote bags or 3 pound bags of apples, in addition to the standard bulk option. Though available year-round, during the fall season, the McIntosh, Granny Smith and Honeycrisp varieties will be very popular, as this is the time when these varieties taste the absolute best. Other popular varieties will include Red Delicious, Jonagold and Fuji.

Apple harvest will wrap up in early October. Visit a King Kullen location today to check out their apple selection. Those looking for delicious recipes featuring apples should also visit the Recipe section on King Kullen’s website, http://www.kingkullen.com/.
