3-D printing technology has developed quickly over the last few years, and now it’s being used by enterprising designers more and more. A new development is Hyperform’s printed chandelier, which is the first object to be printed using the new 3-D printing process – designed to optimise your printer to print bigger objects without upgrading or installing add-ons, reports Co.Design.
The innovative lighting design comes from Hyperform developers Marcelo Coelho and Skylar Tibbits, which applies the new system to practical product design for the home. The chandelier is made from translucent plastic that glows softly whenever light hits it. Easily printed and assembled with home 3-D printers using Hyperform technology, the design is made up of many circular links, all part of a single plastic chain.
The links are used to construct the chandelier, joined at various angles already set out to allow one link to easily connect with the next. The encoded strand includes the information needed to make this possible, with the printed product ready to bend at certain angles, avoiding the often-complicated assembly process that comes with traditional lighting designs.
Skylar Tibbits said: "We wanted to look at the product spectrum to show how we could make a fairly large scale product that wouldn’t have been possible on smaller 3-D printers. You’d need a super expensive machine to make a product like this."
Coelho and Tibbits chandelier has been made in partnership with Formlabs using a standard Form 1 printer. They foresee the piece spawning a line of flat-pack-style products in the future. Lights 4 Living, a leading home lighting company, are excited about this creative new use of the technology to create home lighting designs. A spokesperson for the company said:
"Design technology is evolving all the time, and Hyperform’s use of 3-D printing to create such an innovative home lighting design feels like a thrilling step into the future. This is an exciting product for lighting and design enthusiasts, and most likely means that we’ll be welcoming many more examples of design innovation moving forwards."
