Every day, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 and by 2050, about 50% of Americans will be over 65 years old.
Claremont, CA (PRWEB) September 24, 2013
We're all aware of the new Affordable Care Act, but how many of us have actually read the 1,000-page-plus mega-law?
Patty Meinhardt has.
Meinhardt, Director of Healthcare Partnerships for VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California, recently gave a summary speech on the new complex Affordable Care Act (ACA) and she shared a few highlights in this, the third and latest video short in the exclusive “Meet the Experts” series released today by VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California. The video can be viewed at: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUkyJNAH124).
In this video, Meinhardt capsulates the topics that she had talked about in the longer “Meet the Experts” forum that VNA hosts on a monthly basis.
The new law deals with America’s aging population and Medicare, she says. “Every day, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 and by 2050, about 50% of Americans will be over 65 years old, " she notes. In the video she uses interesting and simple charts to show America’s population growth trend. America is “going to be taking care of a lot of aging citizens of the United States and we need to prepare for that,” she said.
Medicare, as we all know, is in trouble. An expert in the field, Meinhardt says that the ACA addresses the solvency of Medicare and it has to be fixed. “And if they don’t do anything, there won’t be coverage for anyone,” she says, noting that under the current policies, Medicare is solvent through 2024. She says if the ACA is repealed Medicare will be insolvent by 2016.
VNA has programs and implements ideas on reducing the high healthcare costs and making healthcare affordable. Just one of the programs on the forefront that VNA is doing to reduce exuberant healthcare costs is their “No Place Like Home” program, whose goal is to reduce the re-hospitalization of high-risk patients.
Marsha Fox, president and CEO of VNA Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern California, introduces the video.
"Meet the Experts" provides community access to specialists in the care of patients with chronic, advanced or terminal diseases who need hospice or home care support. Many people with advanced diseases are able to remain for quite some time on their own outside of a formal care setting. Often family members provide the first line of support in this situation. Community education connects those who want to know a complete set of care options with experts who study and provide that care and stay in tune with the latest developments in advanced disease options. Some of the videos will contain not only the public presentations but follow-up one-on-one interviews. The videos are available on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/VNAHomeHealthHospice) and the VNA Hospice and Palliative Care of Southern California website (http://www.vnasocal.org).
