Once a Year Underwater Crucifix Viewing Scheduled in Petoskey

The crucifix is a monument to those who have lost their lives in diving and other water-related accidents.

21 feet beneath the surface of Lake Michigan’s Little Traverse Bay is a 1,850-pound cross made of Italian marble. Saturday, March 2nd is the only time all year that non-divers will be able to see it. The viewing is scheduled from 9:00am until 6:00pm with parking at Bayfront Park in Petoskey.

Visitors will walk out onto the frozen lake where a huge viewing hole has been cut into the ice. It provides a great look at the 11-foot crucifix with a 5’ 5” figure of Christ. The crucifix is a monument to those who have lost their lives in diving and other water-related accidents. It was originally put in place in 1962 and moved to its current location in 1984.

Event coordinator Dennis Jessick warns that the event is very weather dependant and sometimes needs to be cancelled at the last minute. He advises to look out for a tent on the ice.
