Houston, TX (PRWEB) February 28, 2013
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The month of February is dedicated to raising awareness about heart disease and increasing knowledge about prevention. Neighbors Emergency Center Bellaire is joining in the efforts to help their patients receive the knowledge they need to keep themselves and their loved ones heart healthy.
Cardiovascular and heart disease affects an incredibly substantial portion of the population. Many of the complications that come with heart disease are treatable and preventable. NEC Bellaire staff is helping patients become more aware of their risk factors and learning more about their heart conditions. There is vital information every patient should know and preventative measures that can be taken. Aspirin regimens, blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, a healthier diet, and quitting smoking can all be steps toward better heart health, and should be discussed with a doctor regularly.
In the event of an emergency, NEC also wants patients to know how to react. A heart attack occurs when the blood flow that brings oxygen to the heart muscle is severely reduced or cut off completely. There are signs and symptoms that include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, sweating and nausea. It is important to note that in some situations, there are little to no symptoms at all. According to the Mayo Clinic, if someone is having a heart attack, immediately call 911. The person should chew and swallow an aspirin (unless a doctor has told them explicitly to not take aspirin). If prescribed, the person should also take their nitroglycerin. If the person is unconscious, emergency medical services may advise to begin CPR. If not trained in CPR, doctors recommend skipping mouth-to-mouth and performing only chest compressions. Many times people delay treatment because they are not sure they are having a heart attack, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
NEC is urging community members to maintain a healthy diet and to check their blood pressure and cholesterol regularly. NEC Bellaire offers cardiology emergency services 24/7 to ensure patients will receive help when they need it most. NEC also has board-certified emergency physicians who are caring, compassionate, and experts at what they do.
