Buying For Impact: How to Buy From Women and Change Our World, is a new book co-authored by Elizabeth A. Vazquez, CEO of WEConnect International, and Andrew J. Sherman, Partner at Jones Day. WEConnect International is a corporate led non-profit that helps to empower women business owners to succeed in global markets.

According to the United Nations Development Programme, “Women perform 66 percent of the world’s work, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn only 10 percent of the income and own 2 percent of the property.” The data is startling and WEConnect International is committed to the advancement of women entrepreneurs in the global marketplace. “Our business model is simple: We connect women entrepreneurs to other women entrepreneurs, multinational corporations and like-minded organizations that give qualified companies equal opportunities to compete for business.”

WEConnect International continues its efforts to build a global network for women business owners around the world, and offers local services in growing markets in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia and soon Africa. Vazquez’s personal experiences have prepared her to write a book on how organizations and individuals can leverage their purchasing power to have a direct and immediate impact on building a more inclusive and sustainable world.

“I attended a business conference right after graduate school when it suddenly occurred to me that I had to stop thinking about women as victims and to start seeing them as really powerful players. It was a new way of thinking about economic development and the role of women as key economic contributors,” said Vazquez.

Vazquez was raised by a single mother of two who put herself through school at night and became a mental-health therapist. With her mother and aunts as her inspiration, Vazquez went on to become a Franklin Fellow at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University where she studied development economics and international negotiation. Soon after, she became dedicated to women’s economic empowerment and her work in over 30 countries helps to bring her new book to life for readers who want to know what they can do to change the world.
