Q1Medicare.com reminds seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries that the 2013 annual Open Enrollment Period begins on Monday, October 15, 2012 and continues through Friday, December 7, 2012. During the 2013 Open Enrollment Period, Medicare beneficiaries can enroll in a new Medicare prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan, drop their Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, return to Original Medicare from their Medicare Advantage plan, or change their existing Medicare prescription drug or Medicare Advantage plan coverage. Any 2013 Medicare plan changes made between October 15th and December 7th will take effect on January 1, 2013.

Starting October 1st, the Medicare.gov Plan Finder will be online and insurance carriers offering 2013 Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans can begin marketing their new plans. To help seniors get an overview of their 2013 plan options, Q1Medicare.com also offers their Medicare Advantage plan finder (MA-Finder.com/2013) and Medicare Part D prescription drug plan finder (PDP-Finder.com/2013) tools.

As with previous years, Medicare beneficiaries have the option of making no changes during the 2013 Open Enrollment Period and they will be automatically re-enrolled into their existing 2012 Medicare plan for another year, along with any changes that their current Medicare plan may have made for 2013. To inform existing 2012 Medicare plan members how their plans are changing in 2013, Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plan carriers are required to send each member an Annual Notice of Change letter (or ANOC).

Most people enrolled in a 2012 Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan will have already received their Annual Notice of Change letter and are encouraged to review it carefully because Medicare plan coverage features and costs can change significantly year-to-year. The ANOC will inform the existing plan member about any changes to their 2013 Medicare plan’s premium, deductible, cost-sharing, and other plan coverage features. The ANOC will also contain important changes to the plan’s 2013 formulary or drug list.

Since ANOC letters may be a little overwhelming for some people, Q1Medicare.com also provides online plan comparison tools to help Medicare beneficiaries visualize the basic coverage changes in any stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan.

“This year, we have added a basic Medicare Advantage plan comparison tool, the MA-Compare, to complement our PDP-Compare or stand-alone prescription drug plan comparison tool,” notes Dr. Susan Johnson, Technical Director of the Q1Medicare.com site and co-founder of Q1Group LLC. “The Q1Medicare 2012/2013 PDP-Compare and MA-Compare tools are designed to provide users with an overview of how all Medicare prescription drug plans or Medicare Advantage plans in their service area are changing.”

The Q1Medicare.com PDP-Compare and MA-Compare tools include such Medicare plan changes as the plan name, premium, deductible, gap coverage, cost-sharing, and Low-Income Subsidy status for PDPs. New 2013 plans and those 2012 plans that will be discontinued in 2013 are also highlighted along with plan consolidations and crosswalks such as with the BravoRx, Health Net Orange, and Community CCRx Medicare Part D plans. The Q1Medicare PDP-Compare can be found directly at PDP-Compare.com/2013 and for Medicare Advantage plans at MA-Compare.com/2013.

Like other Q1Medicare.com tools the PDP-Finder, MA-Finder, PDP-Compare, and MA-Compare tools are available to all site visitors at no cost and designed for computer, smartphone and tablet platforms. As a convenience the results of the Q1Medicare plan finder tools can also be emailed or printed for offline use.
