The power of the shoe reuse movement engages communities and connects people.

Recycle your Shoes, find your SoleMate

The beauty of the SoleMate program is the romance and mystique that comes with every SoleMate note placed in shoes destined for far-off places.

Re-introducing ShoeBox Recycling, a for-profit recycler of shoes whose new website is The new site offers a strong, purposeful design with easy, intuitive navigation. The most exciting feature, and a real business differentiator, is the ability to download a SoleMate Note and write to the future owner of the shoes that are recycled, ‘a la message in a bottle.’ In this case, the vessel is a pair of reusable shoes that will safely make their journey anywhere domestically or internationally where affordable options are needed. Through the mechanism of the website, the recipient has the option of connecting through ShoeBox Recycling to the original owner of the footwear.

The website’s user-friendly design includes content that is visual, fun, engaging and educational. Short, videos populate each page heading, explaining how the shoe recycling for reuse works for single recyclers (Act as One) as well as groups (Act as Many). Groups include anything from Pre-K to MBA, non-profits and charities, retailers, brands and corporations. Woven in to all aspects of ShoeBox Recycling is social media and the idea of connectivity.

“With REUSE at the core of the ShoeBox Recycling mission, ‘finding ones SoleMate’ permits humanity into the act of recycling,” said Ira Baseman, the Godfather of Sole for ShoeBox Recycling. “It is the hope that our recyclers will step outside the realm of anonymity, write a note and place it in their shoes, and help to make the world smaller, friendlier and greener,” Baseman continued.

ShoeBox Recycling has mastered the most powerful ‘R’ in the recycling triangle, REUSE, with all of the shoes collected destined as affordable footwear domestically and internationally. With over 300 million pairs of perfectly reusable shoes hitting landfills and incinerators each year, they are looking to change the way people think about their shoes and start a REUSE MOVEMENT.

“The beauty of the SoleMate program is the romance and mystique that comes with every SoleMate note placed in shoes destined for far-off places,” said Lisa Pomerantz, Queen of Sole for ShoeBox Recycling. “With a lottery-like enthusiasm, recyclers consider the reusability and re-wear-ability of their shoes with the image of their SoleMate mind. This insures that the shoe quality is very good,” Pomerantz continued.

Each SoleMate note is printed with a unique code for the future happy feet. Once someone finds a note in their shoes, they are guided via a rebus-like drawing to find a computer. They simply insert the ‘url’ address, which is universal, choose a language, enter the code, and voila! Connection! For the sake of privacy and to buffer school groups and non-profits with children 18 and under, all SoleMate connections come directly to ShoeBox Headquarters. From there, a connection email will be sent and the rest will be history!

Since the birth of ShoeBox Recycling in November of 2011, over 600,000 pounds of shoes for reuse have been collected from over 2,500 hosts in 46 states.

The new website design gives shoe recyclers a wonderful user-experience with the chance to find their SoleMate(s) anywhere around the globe. Recyclers of all ages can explore the magic of that process, along with the impact of making a difference by choosing to Join the Reuse Movement, or as they like to call it, People Recycling for People.
