New York, NY (PRWEB) January 08, 2014

With over 20 Bachelor’s degrees to choose from, and more than 15 years of expertise offering online courses by faculty who are accomplished and experienced in and out of the classroom, Berkeley College takes pride in this latest recognition – inclusion among the 2014 U.S. News & World Report issue of Best Online Colleges in the Bachelor Degree category. The methodology used to rank the institutions in this category included student engagement, faculty credentials and training, peer reputation, and student services and technology. Berkeley College Online® received certification for excellence from the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) USDLA/Quality Standards (QS) less than a year ago. As the first online program in New York and New Jersey to achieve this status, USDLA/QS certification places Berkeley College Online among an elite group of institutions worldwide that are recognized for excellence in distance learning.

“U.S. News and World Report is a widely respected standard of college rankings and information on higher education. Berkeley College is delighted to receive such a prestigious honor because it speaks to the quality of our faculty, academic programs, students and technology,” said Dario A. Cortes, PhD, President of Berkeley College. “Innovation is another important aspect to the success of Berkeley College Online, not just through technology, but how we engage students as members of a virtual college campus,” said Dr. Cortes.

Dr. Cortes pointed to various virtual activities open to online students such as contests, community service days, symposiums and workshops. There are also resources students can tap into to enhance their learning experience such as online orientation, real-time online tutoring, assistance with financial aid, an online resource center for veterans of the armed services and a virtual career services center that assists students with internships and job placements.

“Technology continues to change; however, our focus remains constant on student success,” said Sharon Goldstein, Campus Operating Officer, Berkeley College Online.

The online program has flourished since Berkeley College first began offering distance learning courses in 1998 and accredited online degrees in 2003. Today, 2,629 Berkeley College students are enrolled in at least one online course. Berkeley College Online offers 250 online courses each quarter.

A Global Learning Experience
Berkeley College Online education at Berkeley College adds to the global learning experience that brings diverse perspectives and cultural experiences to class. One example of this diversity is an online Sociology course taught by Marilyn Frasier, PhD, Berkeley College Online Chair, School of Liberal Arts.

Dr. Frasier assigned students an oral history project. Students in the course heard about experiences of one mother who lived through the 35-year civil war in Guatemala and another who lived in South Korea during the Korean War. In the northeast region of the U.S., one grandparent spoke about the Newark riots in the 1960s, while another shared stories about living in the South during racial segregation.
