...Masimo is providing an open invitation to other companies, regardless of their size, to develop and commercialize life-saving innovations through Masimo's ever-expanding customer base.
Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) January 13, 2014
Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI), a global leader in noninvasive patient monitoring technologies, and Edison Nation Medical, a medical device incubator and health care innovation portal, have launched a worldwide search for new medical technologies to expand Masimo’s Root™ patient monitoring and connectivity platform. Root is an intuitive, adaptable system that integrates multiple streams of patient data, empowering caregivers to make quicker patient assessments, earlier interventions and better clinical decisions throughout the continuum of patient care.
While Root already monitors a wide array of patient data, Masimo designed the system to provide an easy way for third parties to expand the platform’s measurement capabilities by connecting their own measurement devices. Third parties connect to Root through the Masimo Open Connect™ (MOC-9™) modules, which allows them to capture and display their own patient information on the Root screen alongside standard Root data.
“Masimo understands that market barriers and development costs often keep small, innovative companies from delivering their products to clinicians and patients who most need them. With Root, Masimo is providing an open invitation to other companies, regardless of their size, to develop and commercialize life-saving innovations through Masimo’s ever-expanding customer base,” stated Rick Fishel, Masimo’s president of worldwide OEM business.
The Root system currently captures and displays the following patient data
- Pulse Rate
- Oxygen Saturation
- Perfusion Index
- Acoustic Respiration Rate
- Total Hemoglobin
- Oxygen Content
Device innovations could include, but are not limited to, applications to monitor cardiac, hemodynamic, respiratory, neurological, neo- or prenatal and blood glucose data. In addition, idea submissions may include technologies and materials that support these applications, such as sensors, textiles, adhesives and wireless applications.
Anyone with a Root-adaptable patient monitoring innovation idea is encouraged to submit their idea via the confidential portal at http://www.EdisonNationMedical.com/Masimo through March 10, 2014. All idea submissions are reviewed by Edison Nation Medical’s expert medical and product development teams. Individuals pay a $25 submission fee for each idea and there is no limit to the number of ideas an inventor may submit.
“Masimo and Edison Nation Medical both believe that disruptive technologies for improving patient care are not limited to large, established companies and that great ideas can come from anywhere – doctors, nurses, technicians, even patients and caregivers. Masimo’s Root technology was designed to enable open innovation, which is at the heart of what Edison Nation Medical stands for,” stated Robert Grajewski, president of Edison Nation Medical.

Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) is the global leader in innovative noninvasive monitoring technologies that significantly improve patient care—helping solve "unsolvable" problems. In 1995, the company debuted Measure-Through Motion and Low Perfusion pulse oximetry, known as Masimo SET®, which virtually eliminated false alarms and increased pulse oximetry's ability to help clinicians detect life-threatening events. More than 100 independent and objective studies have shown that Masimo SET® outperforms other pulse oximetry technologies, even under the most challenging clinical conditions, including patient motion and low peripheral perfusion. In 2005, Masimo introduced rainbow ® Pulse CO-Oximetry™ technology, allowing noninvasive and continuous monitoring of blood constituents that previously required invasive procedures; total hemoglobin (SpHb®), oxygen content (SpOC™), carboxyhemoglobin (SpCO®), methemoglobin (SpMet®), PVI®, and perfusion index (PI), in addition to measure-through motion SpO2, and pulse rate. In 2008, Masimo introduced Patient SafetyNet™, a remote monitoring and wireless clinician notification system designed to help hospitals avoid preventable deaths and injuries associated with failure to rescue events. In 2009, Masimo introduced rainbow® Acoustic Monitoring™, the first-ever commercially available noninvasive and continuous monitoring of acoustic respiration rate (RRa™). Masimo SET® and Masimo rainbow® technologies also can be found in over 100 multiparameter patient monitors from over 50 medical device manufacturers around the world. Founded in 1989, Masimo has the mission of "Improving Patient Outcome and Reducing Cost of Care by Taking Noninvasive Monitoring to New Sites and Applications®."
