Activity Bands Are Not Accurate When Your Wrist Is Stationary Unless They Have Heart Rate, Like Polar Loop

Polar Loop bundle is the only activity band currently on the market that can truly measure activity while cycling according to the Heart Rate Watch Company.

No Wrist Movement = No Activity

"With most activity bands, like FitBit or Nike Fuel, the devices are using accelerometers to measure motion, so if there is no arm swing then there is no activity", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "Polar Loop can at least receive live heart rate data so it has an alternative method of measuring your activity when your wrist is not moving, like during cycling".

Garmin Vivofit, which is due out in late March will also have this same heart rate measurement capability. "All the existing bands on the market short change you for spin classes or outdoor cycling because your wrist is not moving, such is the downfall of using accelerometers to measure activity", says Squire.

"We get a lot of calls from people that work out in the gym at spin classes or do outdoor cycling and they tell us that their activity band only measures a very small number of calories", says Squire. He adds, "When we explain why a light bulb goes off and they understand the real weakness of activity bands for measuring cycling, with the exception of the Polar Loop and Garmin Vivofit bands with heart rate".

The Activity Band Conundrum and Solution

"The conundrum with activity bands is that if there is no wrist motion then you are not getting very much credit for being active", says Squire. He adds, "This is what makes the Polar Loop and Garmin Vivofit approach so useful is that they measure heart rate".

The Good Side

"Where these bands work exceptionally well is for people that are running, walking or "wrist active" sports like rowing", says Squire. He adds, "When your legs are active but your wrist is inactive then these bands measurement capabilities are greatly impaired unless they do heart rate".

Call The Experts

"If you want to talk to some real experts, that test and use the products they sell and really know the drill then just call us at 866-586-7129", says Squire. He adds, "You'll never find this level of expertise in a big box store or at Amazon, it just doesn't happen".
