Scammers are more common than you might think, and more active in finding suitable targets which they use for their own financial gain

The article published in the Telegraph dated 13th Jan 2013: Pensioner loses £200,000 over 56 years to mail scams reports about a retired cleaner fell for fake promises of lottery wins - and over the years sent £200,000 to fraudsters. Sylvia Kneller paid that amount over 56 years to a range of fraudsters operating lottery-style scams. The scams worked mainly by promising recipients a big win. But in order to collect the prize, or make themselves eligible for the next draw, the recipients are asked to send money. The letters appear to be personally addressed - but in fact just make use of publicly available data.
Mrs. Kneller, who had a breakdown and divorce as a result of the repeated scams, told The Sun: "Some letters promised me good health if I sent off money. They really shouldn't do that to old people — it's just not right.
"I can honestly say I've never had one penny over all those years. But in your mind, if you're a believer, you believe it and that's it. It becomes like an addiction.
"I realize now what a mistake I made and want to warn others not to fall for these begging letters. I still get them now, but know not to send more money."
