The Turnaround is used many styles of music. The Blues Turnaround or V, VI, I (5-4-1) Turnaround came from the Ragtime Blues era. The cadence of the Blues Turnaround is backwards from traditional western music. The job of the Blues Turnaround is to show the listener where the chord progression ends and starts over, it does this by ending on the V (five) of the chord progression making it want to resolve back to the I (one).
Jon starts right off by explaining how to play this blues lick as follows; he frets the 10th fret of the 5th string with his 2nd finger and his first finger on the 9th fret of the 3rd string and plays both strings together and explains that this is a 6th interval. Next he frets the 10th fret of the 2nd string with his 4th finger and then plays 5th and 3rd strings together again; he plays this sequence with the pick and his fingers using the hybrid picking technique. Next he moves the notes on the 5th and 3rd strings down one half step and repeats the picking pattern and then repeats the whole sequence a total of 3 times. Then finally he moves the notes on the 5th and 3rd strings down a half step again and plays the 5th, 3rd, and 2nd strings simultaneously, which makes “a nice A Triad”, says MacLennan, “you can end with a nice E13 chord”.
